Avian Services in Prairie du Chien, WI

Birds are family too. At Tender Care Animal Hospital, our relief veterinarian Dr. Rachel Gortowski sees our bird patients, so parrots, cockatiels, parakeets, finches and other pet birds in Prairie du Chien have a doctor who understands their needs.

Understanding Avian Care

Birds are experts at hiding illness. In the wild, looking weak makes a bird a target, so by the time a pet bird shows obvious signs of being sick, the problem has often been building for a while. Regular checkups help us spot small changes early, when they are easier to treat.

Bird care is also different from dog and cat care. Diet, housing, lighting and daily routine all play a big part in a bird’s health, and our team is happy to talk through each of them with you.

What to Expect at Your Bird’s Visit

We keep visits calm and quiet to keep stress low for your bird.

A Thorough Wellness Exam

Your bird’s exam includes a weight check, a look at the eyes, beak, feathers, feet and vent, and listening to the heart and lungs. We’ll ask about diet, behavior and droppings, since small changes there can be early clues.

Diagnostics When Needed

If something seems off, our in-house laboratory and digital x-ray help us find answers quickly, often with same-day lab results.

Guidance for Home Care

We’ll share practical tips on nutrition, cage setup, enrichment and grooming needs such as nail and beak care, so your bird stays healthy between visits.

Signs Your Bird Should See a Veterinarian

Because birds hide illness, it’s best to call us promptly if you notice:

  • Fluffed-up feathers or sleeping more than usual
  • Sitting on the cage floor
  • Changes in droppings, appetite or weight
  • Tail bobbing or open-mouth breathing
  • Discharge from the eyes or nostrils
  • Feather picking or a change in feather quality

New birds should also have a checkup soon after coming home, and we recommend a wellness visit at least once a year.

Questions & answers

Avian Services: frequently asked questions

Do you see pet birds?

Yes. Our relief veterinarian, Dr. Rachel Gortowski, sees our bird patients. Call (608) 326-7101 to check her availability and schedule a visit.

How often should my bird have a checkup?

We recommend a wellness exam at least once a year, plus a checkup soon after bringing a new bird home. Because birds hide illness well, regular visits help us catch problems early.

How should I bring my bird to the appointment?

Bring your bird in a small, secure travel carrier. If you can, bring a photo of the home cage setup and a list of what your bird eats, and leave fresh droppings on the carrier paper so we can look at them.
